Munich 1972
Diesel Street Room
Dennis Collett on 'his' balcony with a fine view over the Karstadt Supermarket with the Stadium and the Olympia Tower in the distance. The rooms, as can be seen in the picture on the right, were pretty basic and not all had balconies. I recall that Robin Clark actually slept in the kitchen (!), which had not been fitted out - except for the plumbing. One night he turned over in bed, caught the tap and nearly flooded the room!
Flags The Flame
Munich was the first foreign expedition for the majority of VT and there was unlimited access to all the venues (until the events of September 5th). The photographs above of the flame (right) and the flags used in medal ceremonies could not be obtained so easily in more recent times.
The Stadium 1972 The Stadium 1988
The left hand picture, taken from the observation deck of the Olympia Tower, shows the stadium in 1972 when it was brand new. The picture on the right was taken in December 1988 from inside the observation deck as exterior access was not allowed, There is, actually, very little change in sixteen years apart from wear and tear to the roof material.

1988
Left, the tower and roof in the summer of 1972. The centre picture is of CB in the stadium in December 1988, taken while visiting Munich for the Christmas market. The whole Olympia Park is open and you can wander to your heart's content - it was too cold to go far!. The right hand picture shows some of the problems with the roof covering that have been caused, apparently, by too much sunlight.
